Lipsett Lake Association Fall Meeting

The general meeting of the Lipsett Lake Association was called to order by the President, Mark Hansen, at 9:00 a.m. at the Lipsie Pines Tavern. Approximately 35 members were in attendance.
Committee Reports
Presidents Report – Mark Hansen – Our goal is to keep Lipsett Lake as clean as possible. At Memorial Day’s meeting, there were questions on what our financial goal was to keep the lake clean—we’re hoping to agree on a goal by the end of this meeting.
Every year a director gets replaced. Carolyn, Ellen, and Kasey are directors. Chuck Pillsbury has nominated himself as a director, replacing Carolyn Schlitter. Aaron/Bob M/C
Spring Meeting Minutes: We will provide hard copies of the Spring 2019 minutes and also from this meeting for approval at the 2020 Memorial Day weekend meeting. Also, you can reference the blog for the minutes.
Treasurer’s Report – Mark Schlitter –Handed out reports that showed 8 months of lake association activity compared to 2018. Lots of great programming this year! We will re-apply for the 2020 grant application that we get from the state (it’s a $4,000 grant that offsets the lake landing maintenance, and another $1,000 for 2019 by the end of the year). Where we’re at today, from a cash standpoint, is just over a little $34,650 in the account. Bob M/Bob B M/C
Fundraising – Aaron & Holly Temple –Thank you to all of our volunteers!
Pancake breakfast:Saturday of fourth of July weekend, we had close to 150 people attend for pancakes, sausages, coffee, milk, and orange juice. Thank you to the Schlitters for hosting, as well as John, Ellen, Bob, Nathan, Mari, Derek, and others for their help. Julie and Michael Miller also had donated gifts for the Corn & Brat Feed—sold raffle tickets for it at the pancake breakfast. Total of $870 raised.
Corn & Brat Feed:Thank you to John and Lisa for hosting. Thank you to Mark H and Marybeth for background music. Thank you to Rob’s family for shucking corn. 50/50 raffle about $250 raised. Total of $1,817 raised. Everything that’s donated helps—whether you’ve got a basket, idea, or your time!
Coffee mugs & Can Koozies:Still have some left—take them while they last!
Dock Out:This year’s dock out will be October 12, 2019. The cost is $2/foot, $50/lift. If you’re not there, Aaron will email or call in order to put stakes where you want your dock and/or lift. Reach out to Aaron if you would like your dock out or if you would like to volunteer.
Pontoon Parade:Taken over by Chris Schneider—thank you for coordinating that!
If you have ideas for future fundraising or you want to do a fundraising effort on your own, you can reach out to Aaron and Holly Temple for help. You can certainly fundraise on your own, but reach out to help if you would like it. As always, we need volunteers!
Lipsett Lake gives back to all of us—let’s give back to the lake!
Lake Management – Bob Baker –
Lake Ties is a free mailing list with important information on protecting bodies of water. This was the last weekend for Leonard Hudson down at the boat landing. He’s done a great job interacting with people on the lake. He has been a great source of information, such as that you can’t take bait from one lake to another. Thank him for his help and that we hope to have him back next year or also possibly his wife. He is also a handyman and Bob has copies of his business card. His information will also be on the blog.
About a month ago, there was a fishing contest at Birchwood Lake and all of them refused to spray down—apparently there were concerns that the bleach cleaner would ruin their boats. Bob reached out to boat manufacturers and at least two have responded saying that bleach will not harm your boats in any way—the bleach solution won’t even stain your jeans.
Purple Strife: there were some concerns but turned out to be false alarms. Last year, cut and sprayed about a dozen plants, and they did not come back.
Zebra Mussels: Photos that Chris put on the blog from Big McKenzie on July 4thweekend; pretty dense populations on rocks and vegetation. The zebra mussels are attaching to native plants and will likely kill them—which means that there isn’t anything for the minnows to eat, and the cycle continues. The water will look clearer, but surfaces will be covered in sharp mussels.
After 2017, the density was 20/square foot, last year at 80, and Bob estimates 600 by next year. What we’re doing at Lipsett is trying hard to keep them out of our lake. If/when we get them, it’s about $150,000 in potential emergency grant funds, which would require a $40,000 match on our part.
For the curly leaf, it’s ok but increasing. If we decide to start cleaning that up, it would cost about $30,000–$60,000 to rent or buy a harvester. Bob is looking into if it’s possible to rent one of those. Lakes that own them like Clam Lake are using them at the same time we would like to use them, so that might not be a viable option.
Our sub-committee recommended that we work toward a $50,000 nest egg—we are at $34,000 in cash now. Grace/Sandy M/C.
Membership – Carolyn Schlitter and Julie Miller – Carolyn and Julie are asking for help to know if certain cabins are still there or have sold. If you ever know that someone has sold, please reach out, introduce yourself, get their information and connect with Carolyn or Julie.
Loon Ranger – Donna Twining –Never saw the parents the past couple of weeks. Have seen floaters in front of their place and saw them flying away at night. Not sure where the parents or babies went. Grace saw 2 babies last night but no parents. Someone found a baby off of County Line Road; called the DNR and received help from Aaron Temple’s family. Advice from the DNR: put it in a box and try to find a loon parent. Released it where there was a mother and babies. Grace/John M/C.
Other News –
Grace has copies of Under the Orioles Nest, if you would like a copy, they are $20/book.
Christmas Party:December 7, 2019 at Lipsie Pines. Please bring a gift to donate to Toys for Tots. Get together with your neighbors during the winter season!
REMINDER – Volunteers are extremely important for the Association and the lake, please volunteer in any way you can!
The meeting was adjourned at 9:52.
Report is submitted by Mari Yell, Secretary.
