LAKE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT by Bob Baker

Invasive Species Watch:  In the event you are not aware, we received another Clean Boats, Clean Waters grant from the DNR and will have paid inspectors at the public landing on weekends from the fishing opener until Labor Day in September.  The three workers will inspect all boats and trailers entering Lipsett Lake making sure all aquatic materials are removed.

As a special note to all Lipsett property owners, if you occasionally take your boats to other lakes, please make certain that you inspect your boat and trailer carefully and power wash both if possible.  A recent article in the Journal of Aquatic Plant Management showed that Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) could regenerate from fragments that have been 100% desiccated and out of the water for months.  More specifically, although prolonged desiccation of over a month significantly reduced EWM viability, a small proportion (2%) of fragments that were 100% dried were still viable and able to form rootlets.  Clearly, we don't want EWM introduced into Lipsett Lake, so please inspect your boats and trailers carefully when putting them in Lipsett, especially if they have been on another lake.  The same would apply to those who purchase used trailers, docks, and lifts.  Ham Lake, near Danbury, has no public access and yet has a serious EWM infestation, indicating that the Ham Lake property owners, unfortunately, introduced EWM into their own lake.  For anyone interested in reading the original article, here is the link:

Upcoming Events:

Loon Presentation:  At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, the Burnett Lakes and Rivers Association is sponsoring a talk on Loons at Forts Folle Avione.  The presentation will be given by Erica LeMoine, a nationally recognized expert on loons, should be entertaining to both children and adults and will include an actor in a loon costume.  There is no cost for this event, so please mark your calendars.

Northwest Lakes Conference:  The 2014 NW lakes Conference will be held at Drummond High School from 8:00-3:00 on Friday, June 20.  The conference consists of three sessions, each with concurrent talks ranging from controlling Curly Leaf Pondweed, to improving fish habitat, to the history and cultural significance of wild rice.  Many years between 2 and 6 people from Lipsett Lake have attended this conference.  At the Association meeting on May 24, brochures for the conference will be available and we will discuss the possibility of covering the $35 registration fee for perhaps as many as four individuals from the Association treasury.

Lake Life Pocketbooks:  At the Association meeting on May 26, all attendees will receive free copies of the Burnett County Lake Life Pocketbook.  This small sized booklet contains a wealth of information ranging from first aid, to the fines for boating violations, to emergency phone numbers, to a great recipe for pickled northern.  The booklets were developed and are being distributed by the Burnett County Lakes and Rivers Association.
