The Spring Lake Association Meeting took place at Lipsie Pines Tavern at 9:00 AM Saturday, May 24 -- we had approximately 42 people attend. This is not intended to be the minutes of the meeting, just a summary of the discussion.
ENVASIVE SPECIES PREVENTION:
1. Curley Leaf Pondweed: Grants and $750 from Lipsett Lake will be used to pay the Burnett County Conservation Dept. to do a survey of Curley Pondweed. The DNR recomnends that this be done every 5 years and we plan to use the same source each time so that we can make accurate comparisons. If we see that Curley Leaf is expanding, we have a plan to control it.
2. Boat Inspectors: The Lake Association is paying for boat monitors (with a DNR grant) to check for Eurasion Milfoil and other invasive species. There will be inspectors at the boat landing from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays and holidays. These are mostly young people who take their responsibility very seriously so please thank them and treat them with the respect they deserve.
3. Eurasion Milfoil can live through the winter so any boat and/or trailer that has been on another lake should be thoroughly cleaned before putting it in Lipsett Lake. If you have guests who come up with their boat, be sure to talk to them about cleaning it up before putting it on the lake. High-pressure wash is the best way to clean it - you can do that at most car washes or clean it good with soap and water.
4. Lake Pocket Book: The Lake Association will donate $40 to the Lakes and Rivers Association to help publish a Lake Life Pocketbook -- a handy reference guide for those who enjoy our lakes.
5. Lakes and Rivers Conference in Drumand: The Lake Association will pay up to $140 dollars for people to attend the Lake Conference in Drumand on Friday, June 20, 2014 in the Drummond High School at Drummond Wisconsin. The cost per person is $35.
Sessions will include:
Session 1 - current lake legislation; lake eutrophication: Too Much of a Good Thing; Controlling Eurasian Water Milfoil: Partnerships protecting waterways and the Life and Challenges of the Common Loon.
Session 2 An overview of Shoreland Zoning and Shoreland Mitigation Options; Accessing Shoreland Habitat; Curtailing Curly Leaf Pondweed; Partnering for Lake Ecology Education; Improving Habitat with Fish Sticks
Session 3 Damned if you Do -- Damned if you Don’t - what does it mean to own a Dam?; Loving a Lake to Death; The History and Cultural Significance of Wild Rice; Lake Associations Protecting Lakes; Bone Lake & Deer Lake; An Eye for Wildlife Photography
If you are interested in attending this conference, please contact Mark Hanson at mhansen@farmersagent.com .
ANNUAL EVENTS ON LIPSETT LAKE:
1. Spring Clean-Up We had the best turnout ever. We had a lot of compliments about how clean the roads around the lake were.
2. Children's Fishing Contest -- runs from Memorial Day until Labor Day -- click on the "Children's Fishing Contest Page" on the right side of this page, for details.
3. July 4 Boat Parade The Boat Parade will take place on July 5 this year and will travel counter clockwise. Be sure to have your boat number on the right hand side of your boat so that judges can identify who you are. Also, be sure to get as close as possible to the Loftus Dock so that Pam can get a picture of your boat. There will be a tie-up afterward, please bring a dish to pass.
4. The Brat and Corn Feed will be July 26 between Sally Nelsons and Jon Hansen’s house. Mark Hanson’s band will be the entertainment this year. Please bring a dish to pass and money for the 50-50 raffle. There will be more details posted on the blog in July.
5. Twilight Boat parade, Saturday, August 30. There will be a tie-up afterward, please bring a dish to pass
6. Christmas Party 2013 We had the worse turnout in years for the Christmas Party this year. Greg thinks it had to do with the cost and will see what he can do to get more participation next year, probably by removing something from the buffet to reduce the cost.
FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE:
1. Dock-In The committee put in 8 docks and 4 or 5 lifts and raised $600. We could do a lot more if we had more volunteers. Everyone who participates says that even though it’s a lot of work, it’s also a lot of fun. Bring friends, neighbors, kids or grandchildren who are old enough to help. It will help give them a feeling of belonging to the Lipsett Lake Community and a feeling of ownership and responsibility. Contact Tanya if you will be able to help with dock-out this fall.
2. Calendars We made $440 from calendars this year
3. 50-50 raffle We made enough money to pay for 1/3 of the band. John Canny was the winner of the raffle and he gave $100 back to the Lake Association.
TREASURER'S REPORT
We have applied for Tax Exempt Status. Apparently they have a lot of applications so it’s taking some time -- however, we are considered tax exempt, and are open for donations to the Lake Association tax free.
Water Quality:
We went from 20.5 feet secchi disk first reading last year to 5 feet this year. The heavy snow, rain, and tanin in the lowlands are the most likely cause and it is already beginning to clear up some.
Membership: Grace Huth and Ruth Baker have taken over the Membership Committee and are in the process of preparing a letter that will be sent to people who are not current with their dues.
Loon Watch: The Association approved a donation of $50 to Loon Watch, Northland College.
Nominating Committee: Grace Huth said that all the people on the board are now men and she is asking for some women to step up and volunteer to serve. You can contact her at huth65@aol.com , Mark announced that he will only serve one term as President of the Lake Association. He suggested that Greg take it on - however, I didn’t hear a yes or no from Greg so we will wait and see if we need a volunteer for President.
Comments from the President: Mark Hanson said that we have the strongest Lake Association in the area. He said that Burnett County Conservationist, Dave Ferris, says that we are the “poster child for what Lake Associations want to be”. Apparently the property value of most lakes in this area is going down, but Lipsett Lake property value is increasing. Congratulations to all of the volunteers who have made this happen and to all the other people on the lake who have supported them.
Miscellaneous comments: You can get dumsters for your neighborhood -- one for your garbage and one for rcycling, for approximately $155 a month, depending on how large the dumpster needs to be. This way if you are just here on weekends, you can put your trash and recycling in the dumpster before you leave instead of having to take it home with you. They are also bear proof (hopefully). Just something to think about.
After the meeting:
Chris and Dawnett Snyder have volunteered to manage the Children's Fishing Contest. I'll send the details about what they will be doing as soon as I know them, but in the meantime, get those children out there fishing -- bonding with older siblings, cousins, grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, friends -- and record the size and kind of fish they have catch so you'll be ready to send the information to Chris and Dawnett as soon as the let us know how they want to receive it. And be sure to take pictures of the children's fishing experience and send them to me at pkloftus@centurytel.net so I can put them on the blog. For some of the kids, seeing their picture on the blog is very exciting. Don't forget to include any fish stories the kids have.
