Spring lake association meeting notes

Lipsett Lake Association Spring Meeting 2024

May 25, 2024

The general meeting of the Lipsett Lake Association was called to order by the President, Mark Hansen, at 9:00 AM at the Lipsie Pines Tavern. Approximately 40 members were in attendance.

We did not have a meeting over Labor Day weekend 2023 due to two tragic drownings on Friday night. We remember Gracie and her boyfriend Kyree with many thoughts and prayers to their families.

Committee Reports

President Report – Mark Hansen: Welcome, new lake members! We need a nominating chair (previously covered by Doug Mulville): It’s an important position.

Approved Spring 2023 Meeting minutes (available at the meeting and online). Motion by Charlie and seconded by Mark Hansen.

·       Meeting Minutes from 5/27/23: Please review the Lipsett Lake Association blog for updates.

Mark Hansen motioned to nominate Chris Snyder as the new Director for the next three years and seconded by Bob Baker.

Nominating Committee – Doug Mulville (Covered by Mark Hansen):

·       Open chairs for new nominees. John Canny has volunteered to succeed Chuck Pillsbury as member director starting January 1. Approved nomination by Aaron Temple and seconded by the Association attendees.

Membership Committee – Carolyn Schlitter and Julie Miller:

·       63 of lake member families are current and have paid their association dues.

·       If somebody sells, please let Carolyn Schlitter know and encourage their neighbor to reach out to update the membership list (which is on the website).

·       If you prefer, Aaron has a Venmo account and he will write a check to Carolyn Schlitter.

Treasury Report – Mark Schlitter:

·       Financial reports sent out a few weeks ago by Chris Snyder

·       Highlights:

o   Generous donation by Rick Pearson family. Thank you on behalf of the Association!

o   Grant money for last year fully received and downpayment for this year received and will continue to apply for that.

·       2023 Report and where we are at as of April. Last page is where we are at just under $74,000 in cash. Operating cash is about $20,000 to help run the Association and everything else gets moved to continue growing interest.

Motion to approve financials by Bob Baker and seconded by Bob Major.

Fundraising – Aaron Temple:

Fourth of July Events:

·       Triathlon: Thursday, July 4 at 9 AM

·       Pancake breakfast: Friday, July 5 at 8:30–10:30 AM

·       Gracie Memory Duck Race at the inlet: Saturday, July 6 at 10 AM

·       Boat parade: Saturday, July 6 at 1 PM

Aaron has been leading the Fundraising position for eight years and this will be his final year. We thank Aaron for his years of volunteering and congratulate on the extra time to be with his kids. Please reach out to Aaron or Mark Hansen if you’re interested in this position.

·       For those interested in the Fundraising Committee: Communication is key, so people know you are present and help keep people linked to the lake.

·       If you’re passionate about keeping our lake the way it is, this may be the perfect position for you.

·       It could also be 1-2 people with plenty of support.

Pancake Breakfast:

Pancake breakfast will be Friday, July 5 at 8:30–10:30 AM.

Boat parade will be Saturday, July 6 at 1 PM counterclockwise starting at outlet.

Dock Out: Raised about $2,500. We have fun and everyone is there for the cause—our lake! How volunteers are found: emails and texts to people who have helped prior, find available dates that work for everyone, and go from there.

·       If you want the dock where you want it, you must be there! Usually meet around 7:30/8:30 Saturday morning and done around noon.

·       Took about 4 hours with 15 people

Dock In: Around 15 people showed up, thank you! Quick way to earn a lot of money for the Association. If things get too heavy, it’s either going to cost more or need a different crew to make sure people don’t get injured.

A little less this year because the ice went out early and extra time. Another 15 guys there.

Raised $1,300 for the Rhine family after their tragic accident.

·       Saturday July 6 at 10 AM: meet at the inlet and have a duck race in her memory. Scott and Angie will put the funds where they wish.

Triathlon: Hosted by John Canny. This year will be Thursday, July 4 at 9 AM. $10 for bike, run, and swim/paddleboard/kayak with long and short versions. Can participate solo or as a team. Last year was very low-key and for any fitness level. We even raised a few hundred dollars for the Association!

·       Run by Indian Mound Road

·       Bike Dock Lake Road, past Lipsie Pines, and back around

·       Paddle board/kayak out to the tube

501c Organization Donations: If you’re employed by a company, see if they do a matching. If you’re going to donate, we could double that money through an employer. Visit this site to see if your company will match your donation.

Can Koozies: $5/each. Great for Christmas and stocking stuffers.

Maple Syrup: More available from Aaron Temple.

Road Cleanup:

We are losing volunteers for cleaning up the road. It’s a great volunteer option, especially if you can’t or don’t want to participate in dock in/out—simply walk around the road and clean up trash. Usually the end of April.

Reach out to Aaron Temple on other ideas.

Other Ideas:

·       Fishing Contest for adults and kids

·       Golf tournament

REMEMBER: Fundraising should accommodate a variety of interests on the lake. We need to get young people and kids involved to show how special the lake is to them and everyone on the lake.

Lake Management – Bob Baker:

Bob has been chairing the Lake Management Committee for 25 years. This is Bob Baker’s final year as Lake Management committee. Bob and Ruth are dear friends and will be greatly missed on the Association and at the lake. We thank them for their years of support and friendship!

Pleased to say we have 3 workers this summer inspecting boats and using the pressure washer, 6 days a week. Able to do that thanks to Rick Pearson’s family donation and related grants. All landing workers are repeats from previous years, including Kathy Hudson, her husband Leonard, and Curtis Lunde. Be sure to thank them for helping us out!

Last summer, Jon Hansen stepped forward to start learning about the Lake Management Association position. If you are able, please reach out to help coordinate with Jon and assist him—this could be a role with 2-3 people.

·       For example, they are filling out a DNR data sheet and needs to be entered into DNR database—would be great for someone with computer familiarity and deliver the data (every 2 weeks when pay period ends; 1-2 hours a month of work).

We have a strong and highly respected lake association—Bob knows from experience! To stay strong and innovative, we need to keep people involved. We already have some invasive species, but we need to continue to keep zebra mussels out of our lake. Keep this lake and this Lake Association first class.

The Lake Association is trying to protect your property value!

State of Our Association – Mark Hansen: Call to action with the zebra mussels and lightning rod—we made a business, and we all own it, so we need to take care of it. We have a revenue flow, which means we’re able to add projects that enhance the lake and everybody’s enjoyment of the lake.

Recommendation for boat launch landing: We like it broken because it prevents bigger boats from coming on the lake. Legislation at the state level to limit their wake boat usage on certain lakes—if you are thinking of buying a wake boat, you may want to reconsider. Wake boats not allowed on lakes less than 30’ and Lipsett Lake does NOT go that deep (only 2 in the entire county that wake boats can work on).

·       There was a natural sponge blossom in September 2022—disappeared after it ate up the nutrients, we think it was caused by wake boats on the lake.

Member Memorial Place Idea: Trying to get a cement pad and bench with flowers in honor of Grace and Kyree. NOT being paid for by the Association but got approval from the Township and Bob Baker suggested a great spot for a memorial. Would be a great place for a garden and open the space a bit more. Mark Hansen will get some numbers put together for our Labor Day meeting to show what it would cost.

Volunteers are always needed: Be sure to volunteer! We have a thriving Association if we have the volunteers.

Connect more members and your children and grandchildren to become passionate about caring for our lake. It’s up to us to keep doing what we’re doing.

If you have ideas that would enhance the lake, present them to the Association. Please get involved!

For example, Jon told Bob he’d help him on the lake—he doesn’t even know what purple loosestrife looks like. But he cares about the lake like many of us do!

·       Other ways to help: Do you know a plumber or electrician on hand to cover with any pressure washer issues? If anybody wants to be contact person or assistance, pelase contact Jon Hansen or Bob Baker.

Loon Observer – Donna Twining:

2 loon couples fighting for territory; not sure if we had any babies last year.

Donna requested somebody to help take over to track activities of the loons. Anyone on the south side in particular? Very simple forms to fill out to track.

4-H Camp Sponsorship:

Aaron Temple suggested we sponsor several kids to go to camp to show our support for the community. Mark Hansen also saw that it educates people on noticing invasive species. We could be training future protectors of our lake!

·       Update: Bought 6 sponsorships, talked to the Director and they were so pleased that we made that donation.

3-day camp costs $140 and suggest we make a reoccurring donation of $350 annually.

·       Motion to reoccur by Aaron Temple, seconded by Donna Twining.

Idea from Grace Huth: Used to have people from each end of the lake who know the people in those areas get together and speak to who would be good for the different positions. John Canny and Scott Russett offered to start this new sub-committee, but we still need North and South representatives.

Diver Donation: Chris Snyder spoke to the divers from the fall 2023 drowning tragedy and they are all volunteers; that can’t be an easy job. Chris Snyder and Mark Hansen requested that the Association consider a monetary donation to those divers out of Shell Lake, coordinated with the sheriff in Webster.

·       Follow-up questions for further research and follow-up for Labor Day 2024 meeting: Can we earmark what the funds would be for? Could also invite to pancake breakfast? Mark will talk to Chris to make sure something specific for those divers and acknowledge their critical work.

Other Voting Members of the Board:

Vice President: Lisa Hansen

Directors: Billy Voyles, John Canny, Scott Rhine

Closing – Mark Hansen

REMINDER – Volunteers are extremely important for the Association and the lake, please volunteer in any way that you can! Thank you and happy rest of your summer!

The meeting was adjourned at 9:49.
